Lewis Shading +

2005/02/09w
Several small enhancements have been made to the periodic table. Lewis electron table coloring has been enabled. This means that the cells are colored based on the number of Lewis electrons.

For this application, Lewis electrons are defined as the sum of the s and p electrons in the outermost energy level, n, that has any electrons. Normally people only perform this on the elements that reside in s or p block, but because I have recently updated my database with "True Electron Orbital Configuration" data from the Chemical Rubber Company Handbook of Physical Sciences, I also provide this information for the for d and f block elements. To see the actual Lewis electron # as defined above, choose the Lewis Electrons table coloring option from the menu bar color choices and then watch the value field of the Attribute Mini Graph as you mouse over cells.

Relatedly, because I now have this new and improved data in the database, I also offer the precise counts of electrons in specific orbitals. Again, choose the particular orbital (i.e. 4d from the menu bar color choices) then watch the value field of the Attribute Mini Graph as you mouse over element cells.
