Interactive Periodic Table

Hi. You’ve reached Touchspin's Interactive Periodic Table page.

The highlight of this site is the interactive periodic table. Some other sites have more in depth information on chemistry, but I double-dog-dare-you to find anyplace with a better interactive periodic table.

None other have the features and capabilities that this one offers. You can go to it directly with the links to the left or just clicking the picture, but, if you’re a newbie, I strongly recommend that you 1st read the how-to FAQ. Most people miss features without some explanation!

There is some minimal help in the table, but in order to keep it small (currently about 95kB), that help is highly abridged. Most of what you will need to know to use the periodic table appears in the Periodic Table FAQ instead. And even if you’ve been here before, check regularly to be sure that you don’t miss the latest updates & news.

Also, please note that this is the only page that correctly links to the current periodic table application. That link changes every time I update the table. And, if this page does not seem to be displaying properly, especially after I have just updated, then please read the info in the What Updates section.

Though the periodic table is the favorite, there are other diagrams and animations related to chemistry here as well.

I'm a sometimes tutor of chemistry and a frequent tutor of high school students. As I have recently had several who wanted chemistry help, I felt I needed to refresh my own understanding, but, found it easier to do just about anything rather than actually study. So, instead, I created this interactive periodic table in Macromedia Flash.

The Latest Changes

Link to Biology.Touchspin.Com

Touchspin's initial biology site has been created. It is available at BIOLOGY.TOUCHSPIN.COM. For this site, I have done a complete revamp of the page technology using php 5 rather than asp. I hope to convert the chemistry page, chem.touchspin.com to php 5 soon. Please note that if you prevoiusly accessed this page via a http://www.touchspin.com/chem url, that style of address will eventually cease to function.

Biology.touchspin.com, currently focuses on photographs of biology slides featuring vertebrates such as humans, dogs, pigs, rabbits, frogs, fish; invertebrates such as insects, worms, dahinia, etc; plants such as pine, zea, lillium, fern, etc.; protists, monerans, algae, and more.

The new site is a work in progress and I welcome your feedback and corrections.

Phase State Fixed

The phase-state part of the periodic table which has been broken for a while has finally been fixed. This has always been one of my favorite features. When it is active, moving the mouse pointer across the thermometer dynamically recolorizes the periodic table to show the phase state: solid, liquid, or gas, of each element at that temperature. Now, let's hope I don't break it again.

Scale Applets

These are a series of virtual scales and balances created using Adobe/Macromedia Flash. These educational web applications are designed for students and teachers in science classes that wish to learn to use a Triple Beam Balance, a Spring Scale, and a Two Pan Balance. Besides being listed on the Flash Applets page, these are itemized with icon-ized buttons in the left side bar for easy access from any page.

My intention is to create a small handful more such educational applets as time permits. Of course, there are a few more fixes and enhancements to make to the periodic table. We'll see if I can juggle everything.

Historic Periodic Tables

The site history page now has miniature versions of each of the historic periodic tables active within the page. Why anyone would want to see these is a mystery to me, but at least now they are available. This comes about in part because a large number of visitor to my site have deep-linked directly to an older version of the table. I can tell from my stats that nearly 25% of my current users are not looking at the current version. Let me know if you really want to see these old versions full size.

Search

My apologies to all those that ever tried to use the non-functioning search box on the page. Rather than try to do it myself, I've decided to let Google do the work. Their serach box appears at the bottom of each page. From it, you can search through this web site or the entire WWW.

Firefox/Opera Users

OK. OK. I finally installed Firefox and Opera only to discover that my page which displayed so nicely in Microsoft's Internet Explorer, looked pretty horrible in the others. So, after much trouble, I've figured out what was wrong and have made corrections.

BTW, if someone else is using these or any other browsers unknown to me, and my pages don't display properly, then please send me an email. Thank you.

Favorite Pages

Some web statistics reveal your favorite pages. Not surpisingly, the periodic table receives the lion's share of the attention, 86%. The others all have 3% or less each. I rounded upward to the next integer for simplicity so now it looks like I have a total of 106% viewership. Life is good!

Knovel LogoI have recently licensed a version of the periodic table to Knovel corporation for use on their portal site. Knovel is a publisher of science and engineering texts and now has a custom version of the periodic table there.
